Where Downtown Hurricane Is
Downtown Hurricane centers on Main Street and State Street (SR-9), the route through town toward Zion National Park. The town exists because of the Hurricane Canal, dug largely by hand through the Virgin River canyon starting in 1893; water reached the Hurricane Bench on August 6, 1904, and the first families settled in 1906.
Landmarks
The Hurricane Valley Pioneer Heritage Park and the Hurricane Pioneer Museum, in the 1940 former library and city hall building at 35 W. State Street, interpret the canal and early town. A section of the old canal, including a flume, can be walked on the Canal Trail from the east end of 200 North.
Homes and Character
The older blocks near Main and State hold early and mid-century homes on larger in-town lots, with newer infill and some townhomes mixed in. Most of the area has no single HOA, and State Street carries steady Zion-bound traffic, so check a specific home's street and zoning.
Schools
Washington County School District assigns schools by address, and Hurricane-area boundaries have shifted as new phases are built. Confirm the current elementary, intermediate, middle, and high school for a specific home with the district before you rely on it.
