Where Historic Washington Is
The historic core of Washington City is the original townsite around Main Street and Telegraph Street, north of the Virgin River. Washington was the first town settled in the Virgin River basin for the Cotton Mission: the first families arrived on April 15, 1857, more came that May, and the town was laid out on a grid of straight, wide streets. Telegraph Street takes its name from the telegraph line completed through the area in 1867.
Landmarks
The Cotton Factory, now usually called the Cotton Mill, at 300 W. Telegraph Street was begun in the mid-1860s, had its first story operating by 1867, and was enlarged by 1870. It closed in 1904, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and has been owned by Star Nursery since 1998. The Washington County Historical Society lists other sites nearby, including the Washington Museum at Telegraph and Main and the Relief Society Hall at 89 W. Telegraph Street.
Homes and Character
The old town has pioneer-era and mid-century homes on older, often deeper lots alongside newer infill, and most of it has no single HOA. Telegraph Street is the city's main commercial street, so homes near it see more traffic than a cul-de-sac subdivision.
Schools
Washington County School District assigns schools by address, and boundaries change as new schools open. Confirm the current elementary, intermediate, middle, and high school for a specific home with the district's boundary tool before you rely on it.
